Every day loads of our wonderful customers slide into our DMs to ask us about collagen. We get it. It’s confusing. There’s so much information out there, so how do you know where to start or what to believe? Never fear! We’ve pulled together some of your most burning questions and answered them all:

Firstly: what is collagen?

Collagen is the most abundant protein in our bodies, making up about 90% of our total protein. It’s the major component of connective tissues in tendons, ligaments, skin and muscles, so you can think of it as the basic building block of your entire body.

Why do we need to supplement our diets with Marine Collagen?

Collagen decreases as we age meaning our hair and nails become weaker and our skin becomes thinner and drier and starts to sag and wrinkle. Adding a hydrolysed Marine Collagen supplement to your diet can help slow down the ageing process and give you that Jeuneora glow that everyone raves about!

Why do you use Marine Collagen in your beauty supplements?

When it comes to collagen supplements, you want to use like for like. Marine Collagen is completely comprised of Type I Collagen, which makes up approximately 80% of our skin’s dermal layer. It’s also the most easily absorbed by the body.

What does hydrolysed mean?

Hydrolysis refers to the process where large collagen molecules are broken down (via a reaction with water) into smaller molecules that are commonly referred to as peptides. The process of hydrolysis makes collagen more bioavailable and easily absorbed due to the lower molecular size.

So what makes your collagen so special?

Not all Marine Collagen is created equal! Our Marine Collagen is sourced from fish skin which is superior to other types of collagen because it’s up to 1.5 times more easily absorbed due to its optimum (lower) molecular weight. Our Marine Collagen has been scientifically researched to provide benefits in doses as low as 2500mg.

Our Marine Collagen is sustainably sourced from Norway and France. It’s made from fish skin that would otherwise go to waste as a by-product of the fishing industry. We have suppliers that source their Marine Collagen from both wild-caught and farmed fish, which ensures a sustainable balance and that natural resources are not depleted.

All of our suppliers champion sustainability and protect their employees through fair labour practises. Our wild-caught fish suppliers take pride in being part of an international environmental certification body created to certify fisheries according to environmental criteria.

Marine Collagen can also be made from fish bones and scales, jellyfish and even shark fins (eek!) so it’s really important to know where your collagen comes from and that it’s sustainably and ethically sourced.

Why don’t you use higher doses of Marine Collagen in your products?

We’ve worked hard to source Marine Collagen that packs a punch! The Marine Collagen in our products has been scientifically researched to be effective in doses as low as 2500mg due to its optimum molecular size and high bioavailability meaning it’s more easily absorbed by your body, so you need less of it.

Another thing to consider is how much collagen you actually need in a day. Our highest dose product, Renew+, has 6000mg of Marine Collagen per serve. While we could add more per serve, or encourage you to take multiple doses a day, your body can actually only process so much collagen a day. So, adding more collagen doesn’t necessarily translate to better or faster results - it could just mean that you're flushing your collagen down the toilet. Literally!
